Richard C. Madson writes about Hans in his book "Gjerpen to Gjerpen":
"When the census was taken in 1860 each farmer completed a Farm Schedule for the year. Every Wisconsin farm completed this form. The Madson farm had the following information:
Acres improved ------ 30
Acres unimproved --- 50
Value of farm ----------$2800
Value of machinery --$60
Horses -------------------2
Milch cows ------------ 2
Sheep ------------------- 11
Swine ------------------- 1
Value of livestock --- $267
Bushels of wheat produced --- 140
Bushels of oats produced ------ 260
Wool -------------------- 30#
Bushels of potatoes - 40
Butter ------------------- 50#
Tons of hay ------------ 70
Animals slaughtered $75
Total value of production - $238

This shows that much of the land still had not been cleared for farming.
The schedule might have not been exact, but it dies give an insight into conditions during that year."
