Thor Larsen Ballestad was born Dec 3, 1819 on the Ballestad(40) farm in Gjerpen parish, Norway. His parents were Lars Thorsen Ballestad, and Karen Gurine Sørensdatter from N. Myren under Øvrum. He settled as a farmer in Cato township in Manitowoc county, where he bought land in 1848. 
He first married Dec 11, 1857 in Gjerpen township, Aase Clarine Christensdatter Hafsund, b. 1825 in Bamble and buried Dec 16, 1860.
They had the children 1) Carl Ludvig, b. May 25, 1858, d. July 12, 1859, a child buried Nov 13, 1859 who only lived a few hours.
After his first wife died, he married to his first cousin Anne Kirstine Larsdatter Gulset, who was born Sept 2, 1842, died Aug 25, 1928. She was the daughter of Lars Larsen Svartangen (Gulset) and Ingeborg Kirstine Thorsdatter Ballestad who had also emigrated in 1846.

They had 10 children:
Carl Christian Theodor born Oct 29, 1860 and died young.
Ludvig born March 9, 1862, lived in Cicero, Illinois, married June 30, 1890 in Cato, Petrea Oline Berntsen.
Clara Inanda born Aug 10, 1864, died March 15, 1927.
Gustava Marie born April 9, 1867 and died in 1930.
Theodor born Sept 20, 1869.
Anna Tommine born June 10, 1872, married Sept 5, 1892 in Gjerpen, Ole Olsen Wethall, Chicago.
Karoline Julia born Dec 24, 1874, died Dec 30, 1912.
Lars Gustav born April 21, 1878, died 1972.
Amalia Christine born Febr 7, 1881, died 1970.
Selmer Oliver born Oct 17, 1884, died 1973.

Thor Larsen and Anne Kirstine Christensdatter are both buried at Faith Lutheran Cemetery, Valders, Wisconsin.
