- TORKILD JOHNSEN LIESTUL
Torkild Listul was the brother of John Johnsen Svenholt, Ellev Johnsen Bestul,
and Rasmus Bestul. See Bestul and Svenholt files.
-1. Jon Torkildsen Gromstulen m. Maren Torkildssdatter or Gunhild Rasmusdatter
1. Torkild Johnsen Listul (1795 - 1878 ) Born on Gromstulen in Gjerpen to
Jon Torchildsen Gromstulen and Gunhild Rasmusdatter. Married Thurine Helgesdatter,
widow of Ole Halvorsen Listul, in 1819. She was born in 1796 on Nordre Foss
in Gjerpen to Helje Erichsen and Joran Svendsdatter. She died in 1877. They
immigrated on the Salvator in 1843 and Torkilds brother, Ellev, and
his family probably waited to hear from Torkil before iimigrating to the United
States a year later. Torkil Listul may have been the only one of the Pine
Lake Norwegians in 1843 to settle south of the Pine Lake. The Stone Bank records
also reveal that Torkil Listul and family united themselves to a Lutheran
parish in the settlement in August, 1847. This entry, probably made
by Unonius, reveals that the Listuls, who settled south of Pine Lake, had
left the Episcopal Church to go along with Dietrichson. It is fairly certain
that they joined the church at Stone Bank. (Per unknown auther who tracked
Norwegians from this area who moved to Iola/Scandinavia area.) John Listul,
a son of Torkel, told Helgeson that his father and Rollefson came to Scandinavia,
(as I understand the text), in 1851. It is said that he had
moved there by 1860. Torkild & Thurine are buried in Scandiinavia Lutheran
Cemetery. Jan Christenson says he moved to Scandinavia Township in 1860.
2. Ole Torkildsen (6-25-1823 on Liestul in Gjerpen to 4-22-1877)
m. Johanne Nielsdatter on 7-15-1849. Both buried at Scandinavia Cemetery.
2. Gunhild Torkildsdatter (8-7-1825 on Liestul to 2-26-1923)
m. Christopher Olsen Saetret (or Sether) who immigrated in 1843 to the Town
of Oconomowoc. The family moved in 1854 to Scandinavia, Wis. where Christopher
worked as a carpenter. (See Christopher Olsen file.)
3. Karin (8-16-1846 to 9-24-1846)
3. Ole (3-10-1848 to 1-6-1925)
3. Karen Thorine (5-18-1852 to
2-18-1922)
3. Christen (4-22-1855 to 4-8-1892)
3. Thomas (7-6-1857 to 9-21-1863)
3. Johan Andrew (10-1860 to 9-27-1863)
3. John Theodore (4-3-1865 to 4-12-1866)
2. Helvig Torkildsdatter (8-31-1827 on Liestul to 6-13-1894)
m. Christian Hansen
2. Jorand Torkildsdatter (3-13-1830 on Liestul to ?)
2. John Torkildsen (12-30-1841 on Liestul to 1920) m. Ingeborg
Jacobsdatter. Both buried at Scandinavia
Cemetery.

And from Donna Walling - rwalling@greatnorthern.net
- I have picked up the following about the Gromstul / Listul families in
America.
JON TORKELSON GROMSTROL born in Norway 1767 and died 1855 age 86 years.
Came to America in 1853 from Gjerpen, Telemarken, Norway. An accident
coming across was the cause of his death the same year. 5 children came
with him to America-Torkel-Jon-Elef-Rasmus-name of one not known, also some
in Norway not known. It took between four and five months to cross the
ocean at that time, depending on which way the wind blew, whether they went
forward one day, stood still or maybe moved back again. Coming across they
had to have food that would keep so they lived on dry and salt meat and
fish, hard tack, flat bread, dry bread, etc. The nine-year-old boy, who
died coming across, was buried on the way across, either at sea or on an
island. He was in grandpa Tudals boat.
This grandpa is Kenneth and Bobby's great, great, great, grandfather, on
grandma Strand's side of the family.

themselves to a Lutheran parish in this settlement in Augusst of 1847."
In 1851 Torkel and his son Jon left Mrs. at Pine Lake when they went to

His correct name was Torkel Gromstul, but when he married Torine Helgesdatter, her foster parent’s name was Listul so they called themselves the Torkel Listul family. m. Thurine Helgesdatter Grini (12-7-1797 to 1-22-1877), widow of Ole Halvorsen Listul, on 7-30- 1819. Ole was killed by a falling tree that he had cut. Thurine was born on Nordre Foss in Gjerpen to Helje Erichsen and Joran Svendsdatter. She died in 1877. Torkild immigrated on the Salvator in 1843 and Torkild’s brothers, Ellev and John, and their families probably waited to hear from Torkil before immigrating to the United States a year later. Torkil kept the surname Listul when he arrived in America. Torkil Listul may have been the only one of the Pine Lake Norwegians in 1843 to settle south of the Pine Lake. They lived between Pine Lake and Okauchee. The Stone Bank records also reveal that Torkil Listul and family “united themselves to a Lutheran parish in the settlement in August, 1847. This entry, probably made by Unonius, reveals that the Listuls, who settled south of Pine Lake, had left the Episcopal Church to go along with the Lutheran, Rev. Dietrichson. It is fairly certain that they joined the church at Stone Bank. (Per unknown auther who tracked Norwegians from this area who moved to Iola/Scandinavia area.) Torkil sold one forty of land on 7-22-1851. He had probably left for Scandinavia, Wis. by then. John Listul, a son of Torkel, told Helgeson that his father and Rollefson came to Scandinavia, (as I understand the text), in 1851. He moved there because, “there was so much wood and water”. Torkild & Thurine are buried in Scandinavia Lutheran Cemetery. Jan Christenson says he moved to Scandinavia Township in 1860. They immigrated with five children.
